In the grand narrative of cinema, Spain has long been a cornerstone, offering its majestic vistas, passionate culture, and centuries-old architecture to the visual storytelling of our times. But beneath the allure of flamenco and the solemn gaze of Gaudi, Larry set his sights on a different Spanish story: his race against the clock to capture lightning in a bottle, a tale of challenge, creativity, and the unfathomable beauty of making films.
I found little inspiration in the usual suspects – a clichéd shot was not what I was after.

Before dawn, the click of the camera resonates through the narrow alleys of Barcelona, a city steeped in history and teeming with life. It’s the perfect canvas for any cinematographer, with every cobblestone pathway whispering its secrets of yesteryear. But with a ticking clock and the golden hour just beyond reach, this was not to be a pilgrimage, but a sprint.

THE HEART OF THE STORY
The heart of any cinematic endeavor lies in preproduction, the sling-and-arrows moment where stories meet planning, and the first seeds of vision are sown. Yet, standing in a foreign land, language barriers, and logistical puzzles morphed the familiar into the unknown. The goal was set: capture the essence of Barcelona, but not its usual face. Larry had to unearth something raw, spiritual, and distinctly cinematic.
Barcelona, the eternal muse, offers a bounty of tales. From the sordid echoes of its gothic quarter to the modernist dreams forged in iron and glass, there’s a narrative nestled in every plaza and courtyard, waiting for its close-up.
But which story would Hollywood Hustles adopt as its own? With so much to choose from, where would Larry’s lens land? The answer, as always, lay in the magic of on-site scouting.
The first stop was the La Sagrada Familia and its dramatic spires are an iconic staple of Barcelona’s skyline. But the Gothic Quarter held just as much promise, with winding alleyways and ancient churches that whispered dark secrets to their visitors.
